John Edward Mitus, 47, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born on November 3, 1966, in Ludlow, Massachusetts, to Walter and Anna Mitus. John graduated from Ludlow High School and Bryant College, where he met his loving wife, Patty. His two adored daughters, Brianna and Carley, were born in Las Vegas, Nevada. John was most recently employed by Sprint, in Overland Park, Kansas. He attended the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, in Leawood, where he had the privilege of leading a disciple class for the past 4 years.

Loving memories are cherished by his wife, Patty, and his daughters, Brianna and Carley. He was an amazing husband, father and friend, and will be greatly missed. He is also survived by his mother, Anna, and his brother, James.

John was preceded in death by his father, Walter T. and brother, Walter F.

His life will be celebrated with a service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, Leawood Campus, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, KS 66224. A reception will follow the service. A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Wesley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a soccer scholarship set up in John's honor. Contributions should be made out to Olathe East High School, 14545 W. 127th Street, Olathe, KS 66062. Please note on the check memo "Mitus Soccer Scholarship Fund."

Condolence & Memory Journal

John and I both went to Bryant College (University now) after Ludlow High. He had a car and was kind enough to drive me back and forth many times. He was crazy enough to even agree to my selfish requests to bring my my bird and/or my cat home from college during vacations when I wasn't going to Ludlow! So sorry for his family.

John - I'm so sad to hear that we will be without least for a little while. But the memories of our youth on the fairways of LCC and elsewhere will never pass on. I think I last saw you and Patty in 1993, on the Strip in Vegas. Brianna was literally a tiny baby. My how time has passed. Dan L and I will carry tees in our ears for our next round at LCC, in your honor. Peace, Brother.

I am so thankful that you guys let me into your family and that I was lucky enough to know John. I've always felt at home when I was at your house, so I feel like a part of my family is missing now too. It's been a scary journey and I'm so proud of the three of you for having been so strong through it all. I love you dearly and you know where I am if you ever need anything.

Dearest Patty, Brianna and Carley. May your memories of John bring you peace and the support of loving family and friends soothe your pain. Know John is safe in the arms of Jesus. Be comforted by God's promise of eternal life ..."He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever." Revelation 21:4.

Patty & Family - Words can't express the sorrow we feel. John battled with such courage - he showed just how strong his faith was and is - and sets an example for all of us to follow no matter what life brings our way. We're praying that God shows His strength and peace to you during this tragic time - and that He will continue to show his support to you every step of the way forward. God Bless...Ray, Judy & Family.

I well remember the joy in the Mitus house with John's arrival. I would stay at their home many weekends during college and watch as John transformed from baby to toddler to child. His constant smile, warm disposition, and kind heart were evident even then and continued throughout his life. I am grateful to have been his friend and know his legacy of generosity and spirituality will last in the hearts and memories of all who had the good fortune to know him.
